Serving: Epping · Five Dock · Western Sydney
Starting something new can feel a little daunting, especially when you're not sure what the process looks like. If you're thinking about applying to become a support worker but you're wondering what actually happens after you hit "submit," this guide is for you. At Adom Grace Care, we like to keep things clear and human, so here's an honest walkthrough of the journey from application to your first shift across Epping, Five Dock and the wider Western Sydney community.
Step 1: Your application
It all starts with you reaching out. You don't need a perfect resume or years of experience — starting with no experience is genuinely fine here. We're far more interested in your character, your willingness to learn, and your genuine care for others.
When you apply, it helps to tell us:
- A bit about why you want to do support work.
- Any experience you have, even informal (caring for family, volunteering, customer service).
- Any qualifications or checks you already hold, like a National Police Check, Working With Children Check, Certificate III or First Aid. (Not sure what you'll need? Our guide to qualifications and checks for NSW support work walks through the lot.)
- The suburbs you can work in and your general availability.
Don't worry if you don't have everything yet. We'll help you fill the gaps.
Step 2: A friendly first conversation
If your application looks like a good fit, we'll be in touch for a chat. This isn't a high-pressure interview designed to trip you up. It's a two-way conversation.
We want to get to know you: what draws you to this work, how you handle different situations, and what you're hoping to get out of it. Just as importantly, it's your chance to ask us anything, about shifts, support, training and what working with us is really like.
Be yourself. The best conversations are the honest ones.
Step 3: Sorting out your checks and documents
Once we've agreed it's a good match, we'll work through the practical side together. This usually means making sure you have:
- A current National Police Check (our key background check, since Adom Grace Care is not yet a registered NDIS provider).
- A Working With Children Check, if you'll support anyone under 18.
- Your First Aid and CPR certificate.
- Your driver licence details if you'll be transporting participants.
- Any qualifications like a Certificate III (or proof you're studying toward one).
If you're missing something, we'll point you to where and how to get it. This stage is about doing things properly so everyone, including you, is protected.
Step 4: Onboarding and orientation
Before you meet your first participant, we'll make sure you feel prepared. Onboarding covers the essentials: our values, how we work, what good support looks like, and the practical details like notes, communication and who to call if you need help.
We'll also encourage you to complete the free NDIS Worker Orientation Module if you haven't already. By the end of onboarding, you should feel confident about what's expected and reassured that you're not on your own.
Step 5: Matching you with the right participant
This is a step we take seriously. Good support is built on a good match. We consider the participant's needs, goals, routines and personality alongside your skills, experience and the suburbs you can reach.
Around an area as varied as Western Sydney, the right match might be down the road in Epping or a short drive away in Five Dock. We aim for shifts that are sustainable for you and genuinely beneficial for the person you'll support.
Step 6: Your first shift
Then comes the big moment. For your first visit, you won't be thrown in the deep end. You'll have clear information about the participant, their routine and their goals, plus someone to call if you have questions.
A few simple tips for day one:
- Arrive a little early and introduce yourself warmly.
- Listen more than you talk at first. Let the person show you how they like things done.
- Ask if you're unsure, rather than guessing.
- Take it steady. Building trust takes time, and that's completely normal.
By the end of your first shift, most new support workers feel a mix of nerves and quiet pride. That feeling of having genuinely helped someone tends to stick. For more on settling in, see our tips for new support workers.
Step 7: Ongoing support and growth
Your first shift is the beginning, not the finish line. We check in, gather feedback, and keep supporting you as you settle in. Over time, you can take on new participants, build new skills, and grow your career at a pace that suits you.
