When you receive NDIS support, you're not just a customer — you're a person with rights that are protected. The NDIS Code of Conduct sets out how workers and providers must treat the people they support, and understanding it helps you recognise good support when you see it, and speak up when something isn't right.
This is a friendly, plain-English walkthrough of what the Code means for you in everyday life, wherever you are across St Marys, Five Dock and the wider Western Sydney area.
What is the NDIS Code of Conduct?
The Code of Conduct is a set of standards that applies to NDIS providers and the workers who support you. It exists to make sure support is safe, respectful and centred on you. Importantly, it applies whether or not a provider is registered — so these expectations cover the support you receive regardless. It's one of the reasons using an unregistered NDIS provider like us can be a safe, well-protected choice.
In simple terms, it's there to protect your safety, your dignity and your right to make your own choices.
What the Code expects
The Code sets out clear expectations. The people who support you should:
- Respect your rights to make your own decisions and live your own life
- Respect your privacy and keep your information confidential
- Provide support in a safe and competent way, with care and skill
- Act with integrity, honesty and transparency
- Speak up and act on concerns about quality and safety
- Take steps to prevent and respond to violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse
- Take steps to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct
Read that list again slowly. Every point is about you being safe, respected and in control.
What this means day to day
Standards are easy to write and harder to picture, so here's what they look like in real life. Good, Code-aligned support means:
- Workers listen to you and involve you in decisions
- You're treated with dignity, never spoken down to
- Your personal information isn't shared without good reason
- You feel safe in your own home and community
- People are honest with you about your support and your funding
- Concerns are taken seriously, not brushed aside
If your support consistently feels like this, that's the Code working as it should.
Your right to choice and control
A thread that runs through the whole Code is choice and control. This is your life, and you have the right to:
- Choose who supports you
- Have a say in how that support is delivered
- Change your mind and change providers
- Be supported to communicate and decide in your own way
Good support workers don't take over — they walk alongside you and help you do things your way. If your current support isn't honouring that, you're always free to read up on switching providers smoothly and make a change.
Your right to safety
You have an absolute right to feel safe. That means support free from any form of abuse, neglect, exploitation or misconduct. If you ever feel unsafe with a worker or provider, that is never something you should simply put up with. Trust that feeling and act on it.
What to do if the Code isn't being followed
If support doesn't meet these standards, you have every right to do something about it:
- Raise it with your provider directly
- Make a complaint to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission on 1800 035 544
- Ask a trusted person, family member or advocate to help you
- In an emergency, always call 000
Speaking up isn't making a fuss. It's exactly what the Code is there to support, and it helps keep others safe too. It can also help to know questions to ask a prospective NDIS provider so you can spot good, respectful support from the very first conversation.
You deserve good support
The Code of Conduct exists because everyone receiving support deserves to be safe, respected and in charge of their own life. Knowing your rights isn't about expecting the worst — it's about recognising the good support you deserve, and feeling confident to ask for it.
Families across Western Sydney rely on these protections every day, and you're entitled to lean on them too.
